Project Description

What is Social Capital and Social Value? What has been done to build or destroy the social capital of Ethiopians. Racism, Nepotism, Fear, Immorality, Volunteering, Lie, Generosity are all related to social Capitol of the society.

Social Capital takes the form of structures, institutions, networks and relationships which enable individuals to maintain and develop their human capital in partnership with others, and to be more productive when working together than in isolation. It includes families, communities, businesses, trade unions, voluntary organizations, legal/political systems and educational and health bodies.”

Social value just like Social norms have differed immensely throughout history e.g men used to prefer to marry fat women or raising your hat as a lady passes by. Even today different Societies and cultures hold certain have completely different value systems when deciding what is considered a social value e.g in Mongolia one of the highest social values to have is to be a horse rider. So to conclude “social values” and more specifically “values” is a relative concept depending on the culture and historic time frame that you grow up in.

Example:

So let us take that England, just as an example only.

First , honor is very important there. It is so important that country does not have a constitution and its policemen do not carry guns. The words , please, thank you , pardon me and I’m sorry are vitally important. In some societies some of these words do not exist. There is a class system but every class knows it’s behavior and requirements but is also vigilant and aware of each others situation and each tries to be respectful and accepting of the other, when they mix and that keeps a very stable society with a lot of different norms., However, it is always accepted that whatever class you may feel you belong to , polite conversation. Going to the aid of a person who needs help, the words please, thank you, I’m sorry, are used by everyone the norm of queuing.’To jump a queue in England will cause yo a great deal of unspoken grief. That is accepted by everyone and deeply entrenched. Politeness, is highly valued and conversations are kept at a very impersonal level. Mainly consisting of the weather, complaining about a service you might both be waiting for and inquiring about another’s general welfare without really caring at all, e.g. “how are you” and the person gives the reply “Very well, thank you,” not indulging in how they really are.”

Politeness, is expected and not speaking loudly or intruding on the peace of another is generally expected as a given. It is regarded as very rude to talk about money, position or age. One of the greatest crimes that one can commit in the UK is disrespect for a policeman and their treatment of you is returned and hard core criminals will give information they may have to the police, if a policeman is killed or severely hurt.

It is expected to do your duty towards your country but otherwise freedom and privacy are highly valued. It is regarded as impolite to talk down to anyone or make fun of another’s misfortune. Herein lies the Brexit vote, England was not prepared to give up those values and that which worked for them. They are a society that will readily make changes if they see advantages in change but they will not tolerate being forced into anything
